Sensex, Nifty open flat
The market has opened flat as global markets dragged. The Sensex is up 10.67 points at 28116.88 and the Nifty is up 2.50 points at 8712.05. About 599 shares have advanced, 207 shares declined, and 48 shares are unchanged. ONGC, Tata Steel, GAIL, Tata Motors and ITC are gainers while Dr Reddy's Labs, Coal India, ICICI Bank, HDFC and L&T are losers in the Sensex.
Sterling plunged to a three-decade low in thin early Asian trade as a break of key technical support levels triggered a wave of stop-loss orders. The pound fell almost 10 percent at one point to USD1.1378 before stabilizing around USD1.2415, still down 1.5 percent from late US levels, leaving traders scratching their heads in the absence of news or market events that would justify such a move.
