'Prefer gold over silver in 2019 for similar returns with less volatility'

The overall Indian commodity market was a mixed bag in 2018. Crude oil took centrestage in 2018 and had a wild year with major ups and downs. All metals were down in double-digit percentages, only gold bucked the trend given its unique position as a distinct investment destination and due to the depreciation of the rupee.

In agri commodities, castor, soybean and dhaniya closed in green. After all the hoopla through the year with crude oil down 18 percent year-on-year (YoY), natural gas closed up 11 percent in the same period.

Fluctuating demand, both physical and speculative, was at the heart of the price movement of all these commodities. Other factors included the strength or the weakness of the US dollar with respect to other major currencies, global interest rates and the weakness or strength of the Indian rupee vis-à-vis the US dollar. Not to forget, trade tensions between the US and China also played a part.

The two most interesting commodities in 2018 were gold and crude oil. Financial interest in gold was kept alive by global geopolitical uncertainty and higher inflation.

It may not be much different in 2019. Equity market movements have not caused panic till now, else gold prices would have gone up even further.

After all, gold is principally a hedge against inflation and a safe haven during times of turbulence in markets. Entering at current prices can give good returns in an uncertain 2019.

Unlike gold, silver did not have a good ride though fundamentals in terms of industrial demand from solar panels and electric vehicles remain strong.

In fact, it fell 1 percent in rupee terms in 2018 despite a slide seen in rupee against the US dollar. The Fed’s hawkish stance too contributed to its price decline.

Low prices make it even less attractive to mine and prices will turn at an opportune moment when the cost-revenue maths starts adding up, and financial investment will flow back in.

The gold-silver ratio (ounces of silver it takes to purchase one ounce of gold) is at an all-time high of around 85. This combined with increased industrial use and financial investment makes a return of 10 percent this year a distinct possibility.

Between silver and gold, choose gold for similar returns but more price stability.

Crude oil was on a roll for the first half of the year until there was a sharp fall. Notwithstanding OPEC’s interests and increasing demand, it is likely that a firm US dollar and increased shale oil production will keep prices in check.

A better play in the energy sector in 2019 could be natural gas. Strong demand and low storage volumes along with increased trade, including from China as well as the demand for clean fuel, make natural gas a contender for the ‘highest returns’ commodity in 2019.

Among key base metals, copper has served as an advance indicator for economic growth and in that sense, it predicts a bleak immediate future – copper prices fell more than 12 percent in rupee terms in 2018.

However, Nickel stands out as the commodity to invest in 2019, even though it fell 10 percent in 2018 due to weak Chinese demand. This year will see increased demand from China as well as from lithium-ion battery manufacturers with a target exceeding 10 percent in 2019.

2019 should see firm commodity prices on the back of higher demand from higher global growth but not by much. Yet its impact on pricing equity and currencies in 2019 will be significant.

But with escalating global tensions, gold should run its own upwards trajectory and shine on its own, whether or not other commodity prices move up.

Today Gold Updates Trading Rules

Buy Signal: When all the mcx gold short-term Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) crosses the long-term Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) from below, signals for a uptrend.

SELL Signal: When all the mcx gold short-term Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) cross the long-term Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) from above, signals for a downtrend.

Trend Strength: Another application of Guppy multiple moving average system is to analyze the strength of the current trend in gold. If the EMA lines of short term and long term moving averages are wide separated by a uniform distance then the trend in gold is seen as stable. If there's no wide separation, then the prevailing trend is weak and vulnerable.

Gold steady on Fed pause hopes, equity recovery

Gold prices held steady on Tuesday, supported by market expectations of fewer interest rate hikes in the year by the US Federal Reserve, while a bounce in Chinese equities stoked interest in riskier assets.

Spot gold edged about 0.1 percent lower to $1,290.80 per ounce at 0401 GMT, while US gold futures were unchanged at $1,291.4 an ounce.

"We will see market resistance until we see some catalyst that will give some boost to safe haven assets," said Kyle Rodda, a market analyst at IG, Australia.

"Markets are sitting on their hands and waiting for more information about the subjects that matter to them."

Asian stocks recovered on Tuesday after Beijing signalled more supportive measures to stabilise a slowing economy, and emphasised that China is seeking a strong start in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, the dollar weakened on heightened expectations the Fed will hold off on raising rates this year due to a slowdown in global growth.

Market participants think that worries of slowing domestic and global growth as well as tame US inflation will make Fed policymakers hesitant to raise interest rates.

Gold tends to gain on expectations of lower interest rates, as they reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion.

Spot gold looks neutral in a range of $1,285-$1,299 per ounce, and an escape could suggest a direction, according to Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao.

Markets will be keenly looking out for any progress in Brexit negotiations as Britain's parliament will vote on Prime Minister Theresa May's deal, which already looks set to be rejected by lawmakers.

"If anything goes wrong in today's meeting, it will be supportive of gold," said Kunal Shah, head of research at Nirmal Bang Commodities in Mumbai, India.

Among other precious metals, palladium rose 0.2 percent to $1,325.50 per ounce. In the previous session, the metal was trading just below the all-time high of $1,342.43 reached last week.

Platinum was unchanged at $799.50 per ounce, while silver gained 0.2 percent to $15.68.

Gold prices are expected to trade sideway today

Last week, Spot Gold prices rose marginally by 0.3 percent to close at $1292.05 per tonne. While on the MCX prices rose 1.15% to close at Rs.32012 per 10gms. Prices started to rise after US and China resumed their trade talks to end the tariff dispute. However, global rebound in equities after dovish remarks from FED pointed towards an improved risk appetite amongst investors might reduce demand for the yellow metal. FED Chairman, Jerome Powell further confirmed slowdown in the rate hike in 2019, which pushed the Dollar Index lower. The Minutes of the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) Dec 2018 policy meeting which released last week further confirmed slowdown in the rate hike. Gains were restricted after Global stock rally over optimism of a possible trade deal between US - China pointing towards increasing risk appetite amongst investors in turn reducing the demand for Gold. However, Increasing Gold ETF demand restricts the downtrend in the precious metal.

Outlook

International markets trading higher by 0.16 percent at $ 1291. 5 per ounce. Rate hike pause by FED might support Gold prices. On the MCX, gold prices are expected to trade sideways.

Gold prices rise as Fed rate tone weakens dollar

Gold prices climbed on Friday as the dollar fell back on expectations the US central bank may pause interest rates hikes if the US economy slows this year, while investors awaited news on progress in the Sino-US trade talks.

Spot gold rose 0.4 percent to $1,290.84 per ounce as at 0310 GMT, heading for a fourth straight weekly gain. The yellow metal is up 0.4 percent so far this week.

US gold futures were up 0.3 percent at $1,290.8 per ounce.

"The weaker dollar and a more dovish Fed are the two most alluring factors for gold," said Stephen Innes, APAC trading head at OANDA.

"There are concerns for the US economy to slow down, perhaps towards the end of 2019 and into 2020, so the markets are pricing rate cuts."

The dollar slipped against other major currencies, after having rebounded from three-month lows on Thursday following Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's comment which suggested the central bank is not done tightening monetary policy just yet.

A partial US government shutdown extended into its 20th day and provided little comfort to the US currency, after President Donald Trump threatened on Thursday to use emergency powers to bypass US Congress to pay for a wall on the US-Mexico border.

"The (gold) market is holding back a little as they are concerned the equity market could rally significantly on trade war truce," Innes said.

Asian equities inched up to one-month highs, but the rally's momentum slowed partly as investors sought more clarity on whether the United States and China could make headways on their talks on trade as well as intellectual property rights.

"Dilemma over the US-Sino trade dispute is still raising eyebrows and needs clarity," said Sugandha Sachdeva, vice-president - metals, energy and currency research, Religare Broking Ltd.

"Once trade issues are resolved, the dollar is likely to remain suppressed, losing its appeal as a safe haven...Gold on the other hand would stand to benefit."

Also aiding gold's upward trend are concerns of weakening global growth, further emphasised by sombre data out of Switzerland and France on Thursday.

"Gold will likely approach the short term resistance of $1,310 per ounce, from where some profit-booking can be seen," said Religare Broking'S Sachdeva, adding that near term support can be seen at $1,275 per ounce.

Spot gold is expected to retest a resistance at $1,299 per ounce, with a good chance of breaking above this level and rising further to $1,311, according to Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao.

Palladium 0.4 percent to $1,326.75 per ounce, and was up about 2 percent for the week.

Silver climbed 0.6 percent to $15.65. However, it was poised to snap three sessions of weekly gains.

Platinum was up 0.2 percent at $821.60 per ounce.

Gold prices steady as interest rate outlook pressures dollar

Gold prices held near seven-month highs on Thursday as the dollar was pressured by rising expectations the US Federal Reserve will keep interest rates steady this year, while investors also waited for further news on Sino-US trade talks.

FUNDAMENTALS

Spot gold was a tad lower at $1,292.46 per ounce at 0141 GMT, hovering near Friday's peak of $1,298.42 - a level last seen in June.

US gold futures rose 0.1 percent to $1,293.20 per ounce.

Palladium dipped 0.8 percent to $1,316.00, having scaled an all-time peak of $1,342.43 per ounce on Wednesday after a Chinese official said the government was contemplating policies to increase domestic buying of automobiles.

The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against major currencies, was marginally lower during early Asian trade.

A range of US Federal Reserve policymakers said last month that they could be patient about future interest rate increases and a few did not support the central bank's rate increase that month, minutes from their December 18-19 policy meeting showed.

China's commerce ministry said on Thursday that trade talks with the United States this week were extensive, deep and detailed, and established a foundation for the resolution of each others' concerns.

Asian shares began cautiously on Thursday, struggling to rise after a multi-day rally.

US President Donald Trump stormed out of talks with Democratic congressional leaders on Wednesday over funding for a border wall with Mexico and reopening the government, complaining the meeting in the White House was "a total waste of time".

The US government is currently on the 19th day of a partial shutdown caused by the dispute over the wall.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Theresa May suffered an early defeat to her Brexit plans on Wednesday when parliament demanded the government come up with a plan-B within days if she loses a vote on her deal to leave the European Union.

Holding in the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, SPDR Gold Trust, rose 0.33 percent to 799.18 tonnes on Wednesday.

Gold prices to trade lower today

On Tuesday, Spot gold prices declined 0.29 percent to trade at $1284.9 per tonne as investors ship into riskier assets post optimism over US - China trade spat. Global stock rally as the markets anticipates that US - China may head towards a trade deal pointing towards increasing risk appetite amongst investors. However, Increasing ETF demand restricts the downtrend in the precious metal. On the MCX Gold prices traded higher by 0.29 percent to close at Rs.31741 .0 per 10gms.

Outlook

International markets trading lower by 0.1 percent at $ 1284.65 per ounce. We expect markets to trade lower as Optimism over trade talks between US and China led to a rally in the world stocks which over powered the rate hike pause by FED which was supporting the yellow metal prices. On the MCX, gold prices are expected to trade sideways.
