Chinese macro data holds key for copper prices: Reliance Nippon

Given copper’s wide range of use in almost everything—from automobiles to housing and power generation to manufacturing—its demand trends are a good indication of the state of the global economy.

Notwithstanding the worries about the state of the global economy, copper is up by around 8 percent in dollar terms in the current calendar year. Leading equity indices of the western world like US Dow Jones Industrial Average index and German DAX index are also up sharply in 2019 and a tear-away rally is underway in China.

A promising start in the new year, however, part of the buoyancy in commodities and global equities in 2019 may be due to corrective rallies from 2018 lows. We may have to wait for some while for the volatility to subside and the long-term fundamentals to exert themselves on prices.

Copper fundamentals are underpinned by ageing mines and growing demand that may result in modest deficits in 2019 and 2020. China, which accounts for almost half of the global demand, slowing down is a worry and a sharper than expected de-acceleration of its economy can impact copper fundamentals negatively.

Environmental issues have come to the fore in the global metals and minerals industry. Vale disaster is a grim reminder of the damage inflicted by miners and smelters on the environment. Closer to home, Vedanta had to suspend production at its 4,00,000 tpa copper smelter in Tamil Nadu due to environmental concerns. The time required to build a similar greenfield smelting capacity is around 2-3 years, assuming environmental clearances are in place.

If the future is electric, then copper may be a good proxy to participate in the electric vehicle (EV) story. Electric vehicles consume around six times more copper than internal combustion engine vehicles. Almost three million tons of copper is consumed in the transportation sector each year worldwide; a strong push towards electric vehicles in the coming years may result in copper demand outstripping supply by a sizeable margin.

The copper market remains tight for now as visible copper stocks are at historic lows. London Metal Exchange (LME) copper stocks are at an almost ten-year low. Chinese economic data holds the key for copper prices ahead. If current up move in the metal alludes to the Chinese economy bottoming out, then the copper bull run may have a long way to go.

Copper futures slide 0.31% on weak overseas cues

Copper prices went down by 0.31 per cent to Rs 435.80 per kg in futures trade on March 26 as speculators cut down their positions, taking negative cues from overseas markets amid muted demand at domestic spot markets.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, copper for delivery in April fell by Rs 1.35, or 0.31 percent, to Rs 435.80 per kg in a business turnover of 1,358 lots.

Analysts said, off-loading of positions by participants, tracking a weak trend at the London Metal Exchange (LME) where it slipped to over one-month low on Monday amid worries about global economic growth, led to a decline in copper prices at futures trade here. Besides, slackened demand from consuming industries in the physical market, weighed on metal prices, they added.

Globally, at the LME three-month copper dropped to USD 6,295 per tonne on Monday, its weakest since February 19 before recovering to USD 6,340.

Copper futures slide 0.06% on overseas cues, low demand

Copper prices were down 0.06 percent to Rs 437.20 per kg in futures trade Monday as speculators cut positions, taking negative cues from Asian markets amid easing demand from domestic consuming industries.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, copper for delivery in April fell by 25 paise, or 0.06 percent, to Rs 437.20 per kg in a business turnover of 1,830 lots.

Analysts said, offloading of positions by participants amid a weak trend in Asian trade as investors worried about the prospect of a recession in the US, the world's biggest economy and muted demand from consuming industries in the physical market, led to a decline in the copper prices at futures trade.

In Asian trade, at the Shanghai Futures Exchange, the most-traded May copper fell 1.6 percent, to 48,300 yuan ($7,191.57) per tonne.

At the London Metal Exchange (LME), three-month copper traded flat at $6,313 per tonne.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, copper for delivery in April was trading lower by 75 paise, or 0.17 percent, to Rs 447.05 per kg in a business turnover of 1,632 lots.

Analysts said a weak trend in most industrial metals on the London Metal Exchange (LME), as investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of the outcome of the US Federal Reserve rate meeting later in the day, kept pressure on copper prices at futures trade here.

Analysts said besides profit-booking by participants, sharp appreciation in the rupee against the US currency that makes dollar-denominated commodities including base metals cheaper for holder of the Indian unit, mainly weighed on copper prices at futures trade.

Global cues, spot demand lift copper futures by 0.86%

Copper prices rose 0.86 per cent to Rs 416.95 per kg in futures trade Wednesday as speculators built positions amid positive global cues and pick up in spot demand here.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, copper for delivery in February rose Rs 3.55, or 0.86 per cent, to Rs 416.95 per kg in a business turnover of 3,687 lots.

Globally, three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) rose 0.9 per cent to $5,959.50 per tonne.
