Smaller parties, independents gain importance ahead of assembly election results

Elections in the five states – Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram and Telangana – have come to a close and the results are awaited on December 11. As the exit polls pointed to a close contest, smaller parties and independent candidates have gained more importance.

Exit polls released on December 7 by various news organisations and survey agencies revealed mixed results for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress.

In case of an unclear mandate in Madhya Pradesh, independents and parties like Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Gondwana Gomantak Party will become crucial, according to a Times of India report. In Chhattisgarh, Ajit Jogi’s Chhattisgarh Janata Congress and independents will gain importance.

If there is a hung assembly in Telangana, Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and BJP will gain importance. Similarly, in Mizoram, parties are likely to woo minor players if Congress and Mizo National Front (MNF) fall short of majority. A key name in the northeastern state could be Congress leader-turned-BJP strategist, Himanta Biswa Sarma.

From Congress’ point of view, BSP’s victory in Chhattisgarh would be better than that of BJP as Mayawati is most likely to join hands with Congress. Similarly, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) would expect a better result for AIMIM than that for BJP as allying with the latter will be construed as acceptance to charges of hobnobbing. Congress will also prefer to go with AIMIM keeping in mind the secularist agenda, the paper said.

In May this year, the BJP fell short of a simple majority in Karnataka. Even as the BJP emerged as the single largest party in the state, it did not win enough seats to form the next government on its own.

The Congress party, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had concluded well below the 100-seat mark while the Janata Dal (Secular) finished with 38 seats.

As a result, the Congress agreed to support a government led by JD(S)’s HD Kumaraswamy, in a bid to keep the BJP away from power.
