Jet Airways।

Soybean prices are expected to trade sideways today: Angel Commodities

NCDEX Jul Soybean fell 1.5% on Monday on profit booking as there are chances of higher planting this season but monsoon rains will be very crucial. As per farm ministry, acreage under soybean was 37,000 ha so far, lower than 75,000 ha from a year ago. As per latest SOPA press release, soybean arrivals for the Oct-May period pegged at 84.75 lt, up by 19.4% on year. Until April, country crushed about 67.8 lt of soybean compared to 60.5 lt last year. In the 3rd advance estimates, government increased production forecast of soybean to 137.43 lt (Vs 109.33 last year). As per SEA, country export only export 40,000 tonnes of soy meal in May down 41.4% y/y. Moreover, for Apr-May period, India shipped out about 58,470 tonnes of soybean meal down 59% compared to last year. USDA in its monthly report forecast output at 109 lt in 2019/20, down 5% compared to last year. Lower crude soybean oil stocks at port may support soybean but lowering of tariff on edible oils and lower soyoil in international market pressurize soybean. CBOT Soybean surged to two-month high on forecasts for wet conditions in the U.S. Midwest which will further slow planting progress.

Outlook

Soybean futures expected to trade sideways due to reports of higher acreage this season. Moreover, increase edible oil imports will put extra pressure on Oilseeds as the sowing season approaching.

Did you notice? SBI Life Insurance, Shree Cement entered $10 bn club in 2019

The market rewards consistency, quality of management and earnings growth. SBI Life Insurance and Shree Cements which rose 17 percent and 19 percent in 2019, so far, entered the $10 billion club (market cap over Rs 69,000 crore).

As of June 11, 2019, as many as 42 stocks have a market capitalisation of over Rs 69,000 crore or $10 billion (Re/USD value 69). These include Godrej Consumer, Britannia Industries, Avenue Supermarts, Sun Pharma, IndusInd Bank, Titan Company, NTPC, Asia Paints, Coal India, Maruti Suzuki, ICICI Bank, Kotak, SBI among others.

Meanwhile, Tata Consultancy Services and Reliance Industries are the only two stocks in the elite $100 billion club (Mcap over Rs 6,90,000 crore).

Shree Cements and SBI Life entered the $10 billion club in 2019, while JSW Steel and Vedanta which were quoting a market capitalisation of over Rs 69000 crore on December 31, 2018, failed to sustain momentum and are out of the club.

While JSW Steel fell 11 percent, Vedanta saw a decline of 15 percent so far this year, which reduced the market capitalisation of both companies below Rs 69,000 crore, as of June 11.

Most brokerage firms remain positive on Shree Cement and SBI Life Insurance and investors who hold these stocks should stay put.

Nomura maintained its Neutral rating on Shree Cements with a target price of Rs 21,500. Volume growth remains healthy for the cement major and, at the same time, the costs are also easing which is a healthy sign.

The rally has been driven by expectations of cement price hikes. “We believe cement is in an upcycle, but we think cement price increase may remain slow, especially after the government’s recent criticism of rising cement prices,” said the note.

“Despite a 5 percent decline since this criticism, valuations at 6.4x FY21F core EBITDA and 33x FY21 P/E are expensive. Overall, we expect 11 percent YoY volume growth for Shree in FY20-21F,” said the note.

As for SBI Life Insurance, Kotak Securities retained its buy rating with a target price of Rs 800. SBI Life reported 14 percent growth in APE in 4QFY19, which was in line with 9MFY19 growth rate, though lower than 17 percent reported in 3QFY19.

Kotak Securities expects SBI Life to deliver 18 percent medium-term operating RoEV with 19 percent VNB (Value of new business) and 19 percent EVOP (Embedded value operating profit) CAGR during FY2019-22E.

The brokerage firm continues to build in high-teens growth and a moderate improvement in VNB margins to drive 18 percent operating RoEV. The brokerage firm also raised the fair value of SBI Life Insurance to Rs 800 from Rs 790 earlier.

Rupee opens higher at 69.83 per dollar

The Indian rupee opened higher at 69.83 per dollar on Tuesday versus previous close 69.90.

On June 17 local currency fell 11 paise to end at 69.91 against US dollar on the back of sell-off in domestic equity market amid concerns over trade worries.

Rupee came under pressure but consolidated in narrow range ahead of the important major central bank policy statements that will be released later this week. Most Asian currencies are consolidating ahead of the important FOMC policy statement and that could provide a trigger to major crosses as well as to the rupee, said Motilal Oswal.

Expectation is that the central bank could remain dovish and any hints towards rate cut by the Fed could put the greenback under pressure.

Today, USDINR pair is expected to quote in the range of 69.40 and 70.05-70.20, it added.

'Upside for Nifty capped at 12,000; deploy Call Butterfly Spread'

Nifty and Bank Nifty witnessed volatile swings on either side throughout last week. Nifty spot touched an intraday high of 12,000 and ended the week in red down 0.4 percent. Bank Nifty followed Nifty and was down about 1.45 percent on a week on week basis.

Bank Nifty weekly options data depicts the highest Put base at 30,000 that can act as possible support and highest Call OI is placed at 31,000, which can be immediate resistance.

Nifty Options data for the weekly expiry shows highest Put OI is placed at 11,800, which can act as vital support while on the upside, aggressive call writing of around ~21.89 lakh shares is seen at 11,900/12,000 which can act as immediate resistance.

Over the week, India VIX was down 120 basis point to end at 13.66 indicating low volatility in the market. Meanwhile, Nifty PCR open interest (OI) increased 6 basis point to 1.4682 suggesting positive sentiment in the market.

On a week-on-week basis, OI activity was not too emphatic to signify any alteration to original long-long Unwinding Structure, with heavy PE OI at 11,800 that could act as possible support.

The upside remains capped by aggressive call writing of around ~21.89 lakh at 11,900-12,000.

Moderately bullish strategy Call Butterfly Spread is suggested for this week. Call Butterfly Spread is bullish to rangebound strategy that offers decent risk-to-reward ratio for traders at a low cost.

In this strategy, we need to buy 1 ATM Call, Sell 2 OTM Calls near target level and Buy 1 further OTM call to hedge the risk.

The maximum profit in this strategy is at Call written strike. As theta decay is fast in weekly options, it is idle for deploying Call Butterfly Spread.

Rupee opens flat at 69.80 per dollar

The Indian rupee opened flat at 69.80 per dollar on Monday versus Friday's close 69.80.

On June 14 the domestic currency slipped 30 paise to end at 69.80 against US dollar on strengthening greenback and increasing crude oil prices kept the investors cautious.

Also read - Rupee may remain under pressure amid widening trade deficit, attack on crude tankers

Rupee continued to consolidate in narrow range for the whole week but today in the Asian session came under pressure following broad based strength in the dollar. This week, on the domestic front, no major economic numbers are expected to release and that could keep the volatility low for the currency. Today, USD-INR pair is expected to quote in the range of 69.40 and 70.05-70.20, said Motilal Oswal.

With all eyes on Fed policy, G-20 meet, gold to shine; oil on the boil ahead of OPEC meet

A weak dollar, dovish Fed signals and safe-haven buying led to gold closing in the green for the second week. The yellow metal climbed above $1,350, a level that was last seen in April 2018. Weaker-than-forecast economic releases held the dollar down, favouring the yellow metal's price rise.

Filings for United States unemployment benefits increased, rising to a five-week high and adding to signs of potential cooling in the labour market. A closely-watched measure of US inflation, the core consumer price index, rose 2 percent from a year earlier, against a survey of a 2.1 percent increase.

In May, the US's $207.8-billion budget deficit was up from $146.8 billion in the corresponding month the year prior. Other data showed US import prices in May fell by the most in five months in the latest indication of subdued inflation pressure, adding to expectations that the Fed would cut rates this year.

Safe-haven-asset buying emerged as US President Donald Trump threatened to again raise tariffs on China if President Xi Jinping did not meet him at the forthcoming G-20 summit in Japan. President Trump said he would impose tariffs of 25 percent, or ‘much higher than 25 percent’ on Chinese goods worth $300 billion.

Crude oil experienced another negative week. Prices of crude rebounded as tanker attacks in the Gulf increased prices only slightly; they have already been hammered by the deepening trade war and swelling US stockpiles.

As per the US trade association API and Energy Information Administration (EIA), inventories for yet another week have risen.

The US blamed Iran for the attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on June 13, driving up oil prices and raising concerns about a new US-Iranian confrontation. Tehran bluntly denied the allegation.

In a monthly report, OPEC said that international trade tensions are hurting demand for oil, slashing its earlier estimates of consumption and predicting further challenges ahead. The Organization is due to meet in the coming weeks to set production levels for the second half of the year.

Meanwhile, the Saudi Arabian Energy Minister Khalid A Al-Falih said he was confident that OPEC would extend output cuts into the second half of the year after holding talks with Russia.

Next week will be crucial for commodities. The US Empire State manufacturing index, building permits, housing starts and existing-home sales for May will be released. Hence, the greenback is likely to be choppy.

Next week, Central banks of the US, Japan and the UK will have their quarterly monetary-policy meetings to decide interest rates. The most important would be that of the Federal Reserve.

In the light of the weaker-than-forecast economic growth, the cooling labour market, rising unemployment benefits and the mounting budget deficit, calls for a rate cut has increased.

Dovish hints from the Fed have provided additional fuel to traders. The odds of the Fed’s dovish shock with a 25bp cut in rates next week are close to 33 percent, according to CME’s Fed Watch tool.

Meanwhile, China's commerce ministry said Beijing will not yield to any 'maximum pressure' from Washington, and attempts by the US to force China into accepting a trade deal would fail. Therefore, we expect more inflows into SPDR gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which would further support a rise in gold prices.

Great volatility is expected in crude oil ahead of OPEC’s meet in Vienna in the last week of June. Any unpredictable development in US-China trade relations may dampen the sentiment for oil.

As stocks dwindle, downside in castor seed seems limited: Anand Rathi

After falling consistently since the beginning of the month, prices of most agricultural commodities rebounded on June 11. Despite a delay in the onset of the south-west monsoon, markets are optimistic that kharif sowing would begin on time.

The private weather agency, Skymet, reports that, for the first 10 days of the month, the cumulative deficiency has risen to 46 percent, taking into account region-wise pre-monsoon deficiencies for that period.

Northwest India is 40 percent short, while the deficiency in one of the rainiest regions, Central India, is the most, at 66 percent. Thus, responding to the weak monsoon progress, prices of kharif and rabi commodities rose significantly from a one-month low.

In soybean, however, only a thin recovery was seen. With the onset of the monsoon, soybean prices generally decline and the fall continues as long as the monsoon advance over the land mass and rainfall distribution is favourable.

In fact, any price rise arising from the present weak monsoon phase would be short-lived, and pressure on prices might again pile up once rainfall increases. Most weather models suggest a more normal monsoon from July. Thus, subsequent spells of rain would raise prospects of a good yield.

Cotton acreage may be slightly lower this season, particularly in Maharashtra, where farmers might prefer soybean to the fibre crop. But, expectations of good rainfall in the later months are upbeat. Accordingly, we don't see any major movement either side in cotton prices.

For prices of rabi commodities, the sentiment is mostly positive as physical supplies have started dwindling. In fact, a rally is due in most rabi commodities, including mustard, chana, coriander and jeera. Supplies of chana and coriander may be squeezed due to lower output in the current season, while jeera would be firm due to robust exports for the second year in a row. A bumper mustard crop has been seen this season, and crushing is on in full swing amid hopes of meal exports. Thus, despite greater output, prices of mustard are likely to be firm.

The market is quite optimistic about castor sowing in the forthcoming season,i.e., 2019-20. But, castor oil exports have hit current season' stocks. The new crop would be available only after six months. Thus, any downside in castor seed seems to be restricted while there are good prospects of an upside.
