Nudging retailers such as malls and shop owners to deposit their daily collections with banks, RBI has said they would be allowed to withdraw the deposited sum in Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 notes, irrespective of the existing withdrawal limits. The decision is aimed at discouraging hoarding of valid currency notes and increasing its circulation to mitigate cash crunch following the demonetisation of old 500 and 1,000 rupee notes. In a notification, the Reserve Bank of India said it has been reported that "certain depositors are hesitating" to deposit their monies into bank accounts in view of the current limits on cash withdrawals.

As it is impeding active circulation of currency notes, it has been decided, on careful consideration, to allow withdrawals of deposits made in current legal tender notes on or after November 29, 2016 beyond the current limits," RBI said. It added that preferably, available higher denominations bank notes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 are to be issued for such withdrawals.

New way to create fuel from water

In a breakthrough, scientists have found an economically viable way to create fuel from water by splitting it into oxygen and hydrogen, using an ultrathin catalyst. Just as solar light can generate electricity, the water splitting process could do the same via the generation of clean chemical fuel such as hydrogen, said Huijin Zhao, Director of Griffith University's Centre for Clean Environment and Energy (CCEE) in Australia. While it is already scientifically possible to split water in this way, highly efficient catalysts are the key to moving the system to one that is economically viable, researchers said. "The world is now facing five major issues for humanity - energy, environment, water, food security and public health," Zhao said. "Global warming is ranked first and it is all resulting from burning fossil fuels because that is where carbon dioxide comes from," he said. "To reduce this and to make the global temperature not rise beyond 2 degrees Celsius you have to find clean, renewable energy and hydrogen equals clean energy," said Zhao. "It's part of the solution if we really can split water into two that will be one scientific solution for the future of sustainable energy supplies," he added.

Zhao said hydrogen would be a promising clean fuel over petrol in foreseeable future. Heterogeneous electrocatalytic gas evolution reactions hold a key for clean energy generation and storage technologies, but their efficiencies are severely hindered by high overpotentials caused by slow gaseous products detachment from catalyst surface. Overpotentials represent the extra energy required to make a chemical reaction to occur.

The higher the overpotential, the higher the energy consumption. This project aims to tackle this critical issue by developing novel two-dimensional ultrathin porous electrocatalysts with superior gas detachment properties and low overpotentials. The outcome of the project will provide sound scientific basis to design and develop high performance electrocatalysts for fuel gas production. The study was published in the journal Nature Energy.

The Indian equity market is exiting the low return trap and equities are likely to deliver 15 percent return in rupee terms next year. The low return environment that the country seems to be trapped in may get a breather in 2017, thanks to better equity valuations, bottoming of the growth cycle (disrupted temporarily by the recent demonetization) and higher correlations with global equities market. Demonetization has come as a negative surprise leading to lower GDP growth estimates and therefore earnings and the recovery are likely to be pushed back by a couple of quarters.

Bakery and dairy products maker Britannia Industries shares gained nearly 2 percent intraday Tuesday after JP Morgan has initiated coverage with an overweight rating and a December 2017 target price of Rs 3,500, implying 18 percent potential upside. It is a leading packaged foods company and benefits from a rising focus on innovation, astute marketing and good execution, which should continue to support market-share gains and mix enhancements, the brokerage house says. In near term, even as demonetization keeps 2HFY17 performance volatile, JP Morgan expects growth rates to improve over FY18 and find current levels to be a good entry opportunity for long term investors.

It also expects revenue momentum to sustain a 13 percent CAGR with modest margin expansion driving a 16 percent EPS CAGR over FY16-19. Strong free cash flow generation, healthy return ratios and potentially higher dividends are other positive drivers, it says. At 11:52 hours IST, the stock was quoting at Rs 2,999.95, up Rs 42.40, or 1.43 percent on the BSE.

The EPFO started putting some of its Rs 1 lakh crore-plus of assets under management into equity markets starting August 2015. Since then, it invested Rs 10,500 crore into equities. In September, the government had directed the EPFO to increase its investments into equities to at least 10 percent of total deposits.

The EPFO will be writing to the Labour and Finance Ministries to form an 'effective' exit policy and will consult fund managers before submitting proposals to the government. SBI and UTI Mutual Funds currently manage the market investments of EPFO.

In a telephone conversation, the two leaders said the cartel's efforts were "an essential element" for returning stability to global oil prices, a Kremlin statement said yesterday.

The importance of steps taken by OPEC to limit the production of commodities was emphasised as an essential element for stabilising world oil markets," it said. During their conversation, the two leaders also "agreed to continue to coordinate their efforts on the world energy markets, including the dialogue on energy between Russia and OPEC.

Due to a lack of buyers in the market, farmers of perishable goods are selling their produce at 20 percent cheaper, says Former Agriculture Secretary Siraj Hussain. He says the farmers may also use poor quality seeds for sowing as they do not have the money to buy superior ones. Farmers will require more money in two weeks time, when they have to apply fertilizers on their crop, says Hussain. They have only till then to get cash in their hands to buy urea. But money may not be very easy to come by for them as co-operative banks refuse to exchange or deposit money into accounts in villages, says Ajay Vir Jakhar, Chairman, Bharat Krishak Samaj.

"These State run co-operative banks in rural areas are in the pockets of politicians who make farmers suffer for their wrong doings. Co-operative banks have been instructed to not deposit money," says Jakhar. Although demonetisation may seem like a shock for the agricultural society, Hussain says the yields may remain unchanged due to this Narendra Modi decision. The yield will instead depend on the weather. Jakher too says the produce quantity may remain the same. He however is not pleased with how international commodity players have created mass hysteria in the media with rumours that India will import wheat and corn mainly from the US due to poor yields.

The Reserve Bank of India late Monday issued a notification relaxing current cash withdrawal limits of legal tender notes at banks and ATMs on or after November 29. New Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 will be issued for such withdrawals. The RBI, however, didn't specify the revised cash withdrawal limit. "It has been decided, on careful consideration, to allow withdrawals of deposits made in current legal tender notes on or after November 29, 2016 beyond the current limits; preferably, available higher denominations bank notes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 are to be issued for such withdrawals," RBI said in a statement.

The notification is being viewed as a relief from the central bank ahead of salaries that companies credit to employees. Meanwhile, RBI said banks across the country have received Rs 8.45 lakh crore from demonetisation during November 10 and November 27. Citizens withdrew Rs 2.17 lakh crore from accounts over the counter or via ATMs during the period while amount exchanged from old notes to legal tender is Rs 33,950 crore, RBI said. Amount deposited in banks is Rs 8.11 lakh crore during demonetisation, it added.

Asia markets were mixed on Tuesday, taking cues from the US where a post-election rally appeared to stumble. Traders also looked ahead to key global events set to take place this week, including a meeting on Wednesday between the world's largest oil producers, and the release of the US nonfarm payroll report on Friday. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 opened down 0.41 percent, while the Topix fell 0.34 percent.

Japanese shares were likely pressured by a slightly stronger yen, which traded at 111.94 against the dollar on Tuesday morning in Asia, climbing from levels near 113.00 in the previous week.

The Indian rupee opened higher by 3 paise at 68.73 per dollar versus previous close 68.76. The rupee slide has been halted by aggressive RBI selling. Expect the USD-INR to be under pressure and trade in the 68.50-69.50/dollar range in the near term." The Indian rupee closed at a fresh 39-month low against the US dollar. The fall comes as foreign institutional investors have sold over 5 billion dollars worth of Indian equities ever since the government announced the demonetization drive.

The dollar edged down against a basket of major currencies on Monday, surrendering some gains after a sharp rally that followed Donald Trump's surprise victory in the US Presidential election. The dollar had surged more than 4 percent against a basket of currencies in the wake of the election earlier this month - but has now retreated from its 14-year high.

US stocks declined on Monday for their worst performance in nearly a month, weighed down by a pullback in the financial and consumer discretionary sectors as some investors booked profits on the heels of a record-setting week. The three major US indexes had closed higher for the third week in a row on Friday, with the S&P 500 notching its seventh record close since the US presidential election on November 8. US stocks have jumped since Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election, with the S&P 500 up nearly 3 percent, as investors expect his plans to boost infrastructure spending, cut corporate taxes and reduce regulation to benefit the economy.

The S&P financial and consumer discretionary sectors have been among the best performers since the election, as banks have rocketed up more than 10 percent and discretionary stocks climbed over 4 percent. The small-cap Russell 2000 , comprised of many domestically-focused stocks, has soared 11.3 percent.

Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of Spicejet , said the performance of the airline has been creditable given the fact this is the weakest quarter for industry. Demonetisation will give rise a temporary blip, but hopefully things will normalise in the following quarter, he said. Fuel prices have hovered in the USD 45-55 range, which is comfortable for the industry, he maintained. Spicejet hasn’t had a huge impact, but it is bracing for ripple effect, he said, adding that bookings and international travel will likely take a hit from the cash ban. He expects industry to grow at about 20 percent in this fiscal year.

He spoke of fleet expansion plans as well. They have placed orders for new aircraft which will be delivered between 2018-2024. Short-term fleet expansion plans include leased planes.

Goa will get Rs 350 crore funds in the next five years to be spent on the mining belt in the state, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said here. "There's Rs 150 crore pending with Central government which will be released soon. This is the amount collected after levying 10 percent tax on the profits earned by mining firms," he said, referring to the Goa Iron Ore Permanent Fund. "Another Rs 50 crore is with the Central government after levying 10 percent tax on the fresh extraction," the former Chief Minister said, while addressing BJP's Vijay Sankalp rally at Sanvordem village in South Goa last evening.

Together from the mining sector there is Rs 200 crore which will be released by the central government," he added. In addition, he said Rs 140 crore are in central coffers as part of tax on Forest diversion. Parrikar said a total of Rs 350 crore from mining and forest would be released to the state which has to be used in eight different talukas (mining belt). The minister assured that with BJP government in the Centre, Goa can be developed into a model state if the party is voted to power during 2017 Goa Legislative Assembly elections.
