John Deere unveils smallest tractor to take on Mahindra Jivo

John Deere, one of the world’s largest tractor manufacturers, on December 18 unveiled a 28hp tractor for small farmlands to compete against the Mahindra & Mahindra Jivo that was launched last year.

The four-wheel drive 3028EN tractor is developed by John Deere India though the company did not reveal investment details for its development. Pricing details will also be revealed in the coming weeks. The new John Deere tractor is targeted at orchard and paddy farming.

With a market share of less than 10 percent, the US-headquartered John Deere is the fifth largest in the country behind leader M&M, TAFE, Escorts and Sonalika. M&M has a share of nearly 45 percent followed by TAFE controlling about 20 percent. John Deere completes 20 years in India this year.

Satish Nadiger, Managing Director, John Deere said, “We have gained 3.4 percent market share in the last four years and with that, we are very close to a double-digit share in India.”

John Deere has two manufacturing facilities – in Pune and Dewas (MP) – for tractors and one harvester making facility in Punjab. The tractor making units have a capacity of 132,000 units from the Pune plant. The company rolled out its 100,000th tractor today.

“We have room at both Pune and Dewas for capacity expansion in the future. We are already expanding the engine facility at Pune,” added Nadiger.

Talking about new emission norms senior company officials said the tractor industry will see the transition to Bharat Stage IV equivalent norm even as the car, commercial vehicle and two-wheeler industry will jump to BS-VI.

The transition to BS-IV will, however, happen in April 2021 and will not significantly disrupt tractor demand, though the price surge is going to be significant. This is because the change in norms will be for tractors that are powered by more than 50hp engines. More than 90 percent of tractors sold in India have power less than 50hp.
