Modi 2.0: Major challenges ahead for the new government

The markets and investors would expect the new government to retain and enhance its hallmark – decisiveness in many key issues that came up, during the last term. Decisiveness infuses greater confidence into business and industries and facilitates easy conversion of intentions and ideas into reality.

While so many archaic laws and rules have been already scrapped, we are still quite low on the ranking for ease of doing business. We need to work on this as a priority as it can enthuse people from abroad to come to India and set up businesses without much loss of time.

It will also be critical in job creation as well as progressive access to export markets. Apart from this, there is scope for more reforms in areas like land and labour. These reforms are basic, although significant from the economic and business facilitation angle.

Currently, the markets are going through major issues in the context of liquidity and credit risk. The inter-bank market is experiencing chronic liquidity deficit. Credit-related issues have accelerated after the recent defaults and downgrades.

We need to bring the position to surplus for economic activity to get back on track, and this requires an unconventional approach to liquidity channelling to the sectors of the economy which require support and lower cost of borrowing.

The unfinished agenda from NDA-1 is the cleaning up and re-organisation of the banking system. To a large extent, this task was accomplished in the last five years. The upcoming five years should ideally see a consolidation of the gains made so far and a definitive turnaround for the sector.

The full-fledged budget, which the new government will present soon, is anticipated for a new direction to the economy, and for the proposals that it may have for rejuvenation of the rural economy as well as the stimulation of retail demand.

The approach of the government to employment generation programs and minimum income programs will be of consequence to the broader economy and retail demand. It is also relevant from the social development perspective.

Midcaps at record low valuations, good time to buy: Arvind Sanger

As the counting of votes for Lok Sabha elections is taking place, the market would want confirmation of exit polls, Arvind Sanger of Geosphere Capital Management told CNBC-TV18.

On May 19, exit polls predicted the NDA may get around 250-300 seats in general elections, which means the ruling party may retain their power for another five-year term.

"BJP majority would be very positive for the market sentiment. Less than 250 seats for BJP might lead to a correction whereas more than 300 seats for BJP would result in a rally," Sanger said.

"The hope is that new government would hit the ground running from Day 1," he added.

After exit polls, the market rallied sharply on May 20 and hit record highs intraday, but failed to hold on to those gains and closed the next day in red followed by a positive close with marginal gains on May 21 as traders remained cautious ahead of final counting day.

Sanger said the new government needs to address the issue in financial and NBFC space.

He feels midcaps, which have been negatively impacted by liquidity and corporate governance issue, are not going to outperform only on the back of the election outcome.

He thinks it is a good time to buy quality midcaps. "Midcaps are virtually at record low valuations relative to largecaps."

"Infrastructure names look interesting in the midcaps. Stable government would be positive for infrastructure stocks," he said.

Markets are not driven by a single factor. Hence one needs to be cautious of global and domestic macro headwinds.

Market Live:

Arunachal NPP urges Centre to apprehend Tirong Aboh's killers

A day ahead of vote counting, the Arunachal Pradesh unit of National People's Party (NPP) urged the state and the central governments to apprehend the insurgents behind the killing of MLA Tirong Aboh and 10 others.
Suspected NSCN militants on May 21 gunned down Aboh, also an NPP assembly poll candidate, and 10 others, including his son and two security personnel, in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh. (PTI)

Counting for the 60 Assembly seats and two Lok Sabha constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh will begin at 8 am amid tight security.

Key parties in Arunachal Pradesh's politics are BJP, National People's Party (NPP) and Congress.

Although Congress had formed the government in 2014, the party lost power after many of its MLAs joined PPA. They eventually joined the BJP.

Since February 2016, Arunachal Pradesh has seen three chief ministers and President’s Rule -- making the state’s political landscape unstable. However, Khandu has led a largely stable government since early 2017.

Currently, the state is governed by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, led by Chief Minister Pema Khandu.

In 2014, the Congress had emerged victorious after winning 42 seats. The BJP came second with 11 seats. The People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) managed to win five seats while two Independents also won.

Arunachal Pradesh voted simultaneously in the 2019 Lok Sabha election and the Legislative Assembly polls on April 11. The hill state has two Lok Sabha seats and 60 Assembly constituencies.

Ramesh Damani, Member BSE told CNBC-TV18 that BJP won two elections with thumping majority, which proved that Narendra Modi, who will continue as Prime Minister, understands common people very well.

Market movement will depend on the trends from key states like UP, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Bihar. If the BJP leads the trends as per exit polls or a better performance, markets will move sharply higher from here, said Abhijeet Bajpai, Co-founder & CEO, Avighna Trades.

"Market heavyweights like Reliance, SBI, HDFC, ICICI will lead the rally and the broader market will follow. In case the trends that come out are mixed or give no clear indication of majority to BJP, then market will tank and slide quite fast as the uncertainty will loom over, he added.
