BJP fares well in 'minority-concentration' districts, wins over 50% seats

The BJP has managed to puncture opposition's claims that the party is anti-minority by winning more than 50 per cent of the Lok Sabha seats in 90 'minority-concentration' districts identified in 2008 by the then UPA government.

Besides a considerable minority population, these districts have both socio-economic and basic amenities indicators below the national average.

Of the 79 such constituencies, the BJP has won the maximum of 41 seats, a gain of seven over 2014. The Congress's share has almost halved, down from 12 in 2014 to six now.

An analyst claimed that Muslims did not vote en bloc in favour of one party or candidate this time.

On the other hand, 27 Muslim candidates won in the recently-concluded elections. However, none of the six Muslim candidates fielded by the BJP tasted success.

The winning MPs are from Trinamool Congress (5); Congress (4); Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), National Conference and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) (3 each); AIMIM (2); LJP, NCP, CPI(M) and AIUDF (one each).

The Opposition parties have been accusing the BJP of not doing enough for the minorities and also aiding and abetting attacks on them.

Nearly 20 percent of the country's 130 crore people are Muslims.

In the minority-concentration districts, the BJP gained the most in West Bengal, which has 18 such seats. In Raiganj in Uttar Dinajpur district which has a Muslim population of nearly 49 percent, BJP's Debasree Chaudhuri defeated TMC's Agarwal Kanaialal by 60574 votes.

In neighbouring Jalpaiguri seat, BJP candidate Jayanta Kumar Roy defeated sitting TMC MP Bijoy Chandra Barman by 184004 votes. The seat has about 20 percent Muslim population.

In Maldaha North seat in Malda, the party's Khagen Murmu won defeating TMC's Mausam Noor by a margin of 84288 votes. The seat has nearly 50 percent Muslim population.

In Coochbehar seat which has a Muslim population of around 30 percent, BJP's Nisith Pramanik got the better of his nearest rival TMC's Paresh Chandra Adhikary by 54231 votes.

In Balurghat in North Dinajpur district, BJP candidate Sukanta Majumdar defeated TMC's Arpita Ghosh by a margin of 33293 votes. The seat has 35 percent Muslim population.

In Bishnupur Lok Sabha seat (20 percent) in Bankura, BJP candidate Saumitra Khan won by 78047 votes defeating his Trinamool Congress rival Shyamal Santra.

In Hooghly seat (20 percent), Locket Chatterjee of the BJP defeated his TMC rival Ratna Dey (Nag) by a margin of 73362 votes while S S Ahluwalia of BJP won the Burdwan-Durgapur seat by a slender margin of 2439 votes defeating his nearest AITC rival Mamtaz Sanghamita. The seat has around 15 percent Muslim population.

The UPA government in 2008 had identified the 90 minority-concentration districts under a development programme that focussed on education, health and skill development in these districts.

Rampur, Nagina, Moradabad, Sambhal and Amroha are among the 20 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh where Muslim voters are in a very large number.

Though the BJP performed well in the state, ensuring that the SP-BSP-RLD combine does not get a cake walk, the 'mahagathbandhan' bagged these five seats.

In Rampur, where Muslims account for nearly 50 percent of the voters, veteran SP leader Azam Khan defeated BJP candidate and actor-turned-politician Jaya Prada by over one lakh votes.

The BSP won the Nagina seat when its candidate Girish Chandra defeated sitting BJP MP Yashwant Singh by over 1.66 lakh votes.

In Moradabad, ST Hasan of the SP defeated sitting BJP MP Kunwar Sarvesh Kumar by nearly 99,000 votes.

Another SP candidate, SR Barq defeated Parmeshwar Lal Saini of BJP in Sambhal seat.

In Amroha, Kunwar Danish Ali, who had defected from the Janata Dal (Secular) and had joined the BSP just ahead of the polls, emerged victorious trouncing sitting BJP MP Kunwar Singh Tanwar.

The Congress had fielded six Muslim candidates in Uttar Pradesh, but none of them won.

In the entire state, Muslims account for nearly 20 percent of the population.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, not a single Muslim candidate won and the jinx was broken only during Kairana bypoll when the seat was wrested from the BJP by Tabassum Hassan, the joint opposition candidate, who had contested on RLD ticket. In Bihar, there are seven such seats, and in Kishanganj, which has around 65 percent Muslim population, Congress's Mohd Javed defeated JD(U)'s Syed Mahmood Ashraf by 34,466 votes.

In Araria (45 percent), BJP's Pradip Kumar Singh defeated sitting RJD MP Sarfaraz Alam by 1,37,241 votes while in Katihar (40 percent) Congress's Tariq Anwar (sitting MP, who won the seat on an NCP ticket) lost to Dulal Chandra Goswami of the JD(U) by 57,203 votes.

Darbhanga, having a Muslim population of about 23 percent, saw BJP's Gopal Jee Thakur defeating RJD's Abdul Bari Siddiqui by 2,67,979 votes.

In Khagaria (23 percent), sitting Lok Janshakti Party MP Mehboob Ali Kaisar defeated Mukesh Sahni of VIP by 2,48,570 votes, while in Banka (20 percent) JD(U)'s Giridhari Yadav prevailed over sitting RJD MP Jai Prakash Narain Yadav by 2,00,532 votes and in Madhubani (19 percent), BJP's Ashok Yadav defeated VIP's Badri Purbe by 4,54,940 votes.

In Assam, the Congress won two of the seats where there is a sizeable Muslim population -- Abdul Khaleque in Barpeta (over 45 percent) and Pradyut Bordoloi in Nowgong (over 34 percent). AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal emerged winner in Dhubri, where the Muslim population is over 65 percent.

Modi 2.0: Major challenges ahead for the new government

The markets and investors would expect the new government to retain and enhance its hallmark – decisiveness in many key issues that came up, during the last term. Decisiveness infuses greater confidence into business and industries and facilitates easy conversion of intentions and ideas into reality.

While so many archaic laws and rules have been already scrapped, we are still quite low on the ranking for ease of doing business. We need to work on this as a priority as it can enthuse people from abroad to come to India and set up businesses without much loss of time.

It will also be critical in job creation as well as progressive access to export markets. Apart from this, there is scope for more reforms in areas like land and labour. These reforms are basic, although significant from the economic and business facilitation angle.

Currently, the markets are going through major issues in the context of liquidity and credit risk. The inter-bank market is experiencing chronic liquidity deficit. Credit-related issues have accelerated after the recent defaults and downgrades.

We need to bring the position to surplus for economic activity to get back on track, and this requires an unconventional approach to liquidity channelling to the sectors of the economy which require support and lower cost of borrowing.

The unfinished agenda from NDA-1 is the cleaning up and re-organisation of the banking system. To a large extent, this task was accomplished in the last five years. The upcoming five years should ideally see a consolidation of the gains made so far and a definitive turnaround for the sector.

The full-fledged budget, which the new government will present soon, is anticipated for a new direction to the economy, and for the proposals that it may have for rejuvenation of the rural economy as well as the stimulation of retail demand.

The approach of the government to employment generation programs and minimum income programs will be of consequence to the broader economy and retail demand. It is also relevant from the social development perspective.

Market Live:

Arunachal NPP urges Centre to apprehend Tirong Aboh's killers

A day ahead of vote counting, the Arunachal Pradesh unit of National People's Party (NPP) urged the state and the central governments to apprehend the insurgents behind the killing of MLA Tirong Aboh and 10 others.
Suspected NSCN militants on May 21 gunned down Aboh, also an NPP assembly poll candidate, and 10 others, including his son and two security personnel, in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh. (PTI)

Counting for the 60 Assembly seats and two Lok Sabha constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh will begin at 8 am amid tight security.

Key parties in Arunachal Pradesh's politics are BJP, National People's Party (NPP) and Congress.

Although Congress had formed the government in 2014, the party lost power after many of its MLAs joined PPA. They eventually joined the BJP.

Since February 2016, Arunachal Pradesh has seen three chief ministers and President’s Rule -- making the state’s political landscape unstable. However, Khandu has led a largely stable government since early 2017.

Currently, the state is governed by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, led by Chief Minister Pema Khandu.

In 2014, the Congress had emerged victorious after winning 42 seats. The BJP came second with 11 seats. The People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) managed to win five seats while two Independents also won.

Arunachal Pradesh voted simultaneously in the 2019 Lok Sabha election and the Legislative Assembly polls on April 11. The hill state has two Lok Sabha seats and 60 Assembly constituencies.

Market movement will depend on the trends from key states like UP, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Bihar. If the BJP leads the trends as per exit polls or a better performance, markets will move sharply higher from here, said Abhijeet Bajpai, Co-founder & CEO, Avighna Trades.

"Market heavyweights like Reliance, SBI, HDFC, ICICI will lead the rally and the broader market will follow. In case the trends that come out are mixed or give no clear indication of majority to BJP, then market will tank and slide quite fast as the uncertainty will loom over, he added.

As exit polls suggest thumping victory for Modi, experts pick these 10 stocks

Exit polls suggest continuity of a stable government at the Centre—a positive sign for long-term investors. Any dips ahead should be used as a buying opportunity.

According to an exit poll conducted by Network 18-IPSOS, BJP-led NDA is likely to gather over 336 seats. Republic-CVoter sees BJP hitting 287 while Congress gaining about 128 seats.

Experts feel that anything above 270 for BJP on May 23 will be positive for markets. Although some of the good news is already discounted by the market; hence, profit booking is likely, once the initial euphoria wanes.

“In the past five elections, barring the short-term correction immediately after the result outcome, the inherent trend of the market has remained intact,” Umesh Mehta, Head of Research, SAMCO Securities told Moneycontrol.

“Therefore, investors should not rejig their portfolio post elections and if they have conviction in the quality of the stock, should hold on to it as fruits of patience are always sweet,” he said.

We have collated a list of fundamentally strong stocks from different experts that investors can look for buying on dips. For selecting stocks analysts have worked with an assumption of a stable government:

Analyst: Vivek Ranjan Misra, Head of Fundamental Research at Karvy Stock Broking

State Bank of India:

The Bank is often regarded as the bellwether of India’s economy. The asset quality continues to improve with Gross NPA at 7.53 percent in the March quarter compared to 10.9 percent recorded in the year-ago period.

The Net Interest Income (NII) has also improved. We expect a return on equity (ROE) of the bank to improve in FY20 on the back of improving asset quality and recovery in the credit growth.

ICICI Bank:

The credit quality has improved and we believe that the bank is on its way to recovery. The underlying loan growth is healthy and the bank is also diversifying its loan book to make it less risky. The ROE of the bank should improve significantly in FY20.

Tata Steel:

The demand for metals should improve on the back of a cyclical recovery in the economy, which we believe will happen after Q2FY20, the valuations are also attractive.

Larsen & Toubro:

L&T will be the key beneficiary of a pickup in capex spending and we also expect the company’s margins and ROE to improve going forward.

Mahindra & Mahindra:

The valuations are attractive and will benefit from a recovery in consumer demand as well as focus on agriculture in the coming years.

Analyst: Atish Matlawala, Sr Analyst, SSJ Finance & Securities

HDFC Bank:

The private sector lender has continued to display strong earnings growth momentum, supported by strong advances growth, stable NIMs, steady cost structure and low credit costs.

Operating expenses are under control due to digital initiatives undertaken by the bank. Stable asset quality, superior corporate governance, and solid performance make HDFC Bank attractive at current levels.

We believe HDFC Bank will be able to deliver profit growth at the rate of 20-22 percent CAGR for at-least five more years. We have a buy rating on the stock with a price target of Rs 2,500.

HDFC:

Stable asset quality, superior corporate governance, and solid performance make HDFC attractive. HDFC has been able to grow its loan book by 18-20 percent in the March quarter, which we believe should continue for coming years as well.

Value unlocking by listing of subsidiaries and equity infusion will help HDFC to raise funds and maintain its net interest margins (NIMs).

We expect HDFC to deliver 15 percent AUM CAGR over FY19-21, driven by 17 percent CAGR in the retail business. Growth over the last two years was driven by volumes rather than value, which is positive.

We expect this trend to continue, especially given the strong macro tailwinds in the lower ticket size segment. We believe HDFC will continue to outperform Nifty, hence, we recommend buying.

Tata Consultancy Services:

We believe TCS will outperform industry growth rate and will continue to gain market share. The management is quite confident of posting double-digit growth in the foreseeable future.

However, the margin may remain under pressure in the near-term. There are some macro concerns in the US, which will put some pressure on the stock in the near future.

However, we are positive on the company in mid to long-term. We advise investors to buy the stock with a target price of Rs 2,600.

Reliance Industries:

Reliance Industries is steadily transforming itself from petrochemical to retail, telecom and digital services. We believe the petchem, retail and digital services will continue to perform well in the coming quarters. In telecom biz, management targets to achieve a subscriber base of 400 mn by FY20.

Trials for JioGiga Fibre services for Homes and Enterprise is being rolled out across 1,600 cities where it is optimising its service offerings across fixed broadband, entertainment and IoT based smart home solutions.

It also plans to grow big in online shopping and E-money, where it has already started to build an app that can provide seamless and quick transition across grocery to fashion to electronics. We see huge potential in Reliance going ahead and recommend to buy with a target price of Rs 1,600.

Bajaj Finance:

Bajaj Finance is the largest consumer durables and lifestyle financier in India and has been continuously gaining market share in these businesses. Continuous market share gain and strong distribution have created entry barriers for competitors.

One of the key strengths that Bajaj Finance has built over time is a quick turnaround time which is unmatched by most other retail financiers.

Thus, other than purchases on credit cards of banks, there are very few other competitors that Bajaj Finance sees in the consumer durables business, which provides it with pricing power.

It is also diversifying successfully into personal loans, overdraft facility that can be seen as a natural extension of consumer finance. We recommend a buy with a price target of Rs 3,500.
