US stocks slumped on the last trading day of the year on Friday, led down by Apple and other big tech stocks, but major indexes still posted solid gains in 2016. In subdued holiday trading, the S&P 500 declined for a third consecutive session. But the benchmark index still tallied an annual gain of 9.5 percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 13.4 percent for 2016, even as it recorded its first weekly decline since the US election on Nov. 8. Stocks stalled this week after surging in the wake of Donald Trump's presidential election. Investors have bet Trump will cut taxes and regulations and introduce fresh economic stimulus.

China's yuan firmed against the dollar on Friday after the central bank fixed a much stronger midpoint, but the currency is on course to be the worst performing major Asian currency this year and have its biggest annual loss since 1994. The yuan, which has reached an 8-1/2 year low, was on track to lose nearly 7 percent against the dollar in 2016. In 2016, the yuan has been pressured by worries about slowing Chinese economic growth and more recently by a resurgent US dollar, which has spurred capital outflows from many emerging markets. Many market watchers expect the yuan to recoil further next year if President-elect Donald Trump's policies stoke stronger US economic growth and higher interest rates.

Patparganj Industrial Estate in eastern part of the national capital is home to scores of family-run, small and medium proprietary businesses. Car dealership is one of them. A vehicle manufacturer not having a dealer here is an exception. It’s 4 pm and December is drawing to a close. The last month of the year isn’t the same anymore in Delhi. The day is sunnier than usual and warmer as well. The deadline for the most debated and dissected subject in the country for over a month and a half – demonetization – is coming to a close. Outside the dealer showrooms, the missing chill in the air and the chill in business activity are both palpable. But step inside, the mood isn’t so sombre. The lull has given way to cautious optimism -- new normal being set, fresh paradigms being shaped.
Two-wheeler sales, bookings most hit post demonetisation

The sector that was likely hit the most due to demonetisation is automobiles. To throw more light on the outlook for the sector post the cash crunch John K Paul, President, Federation Of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The year-on-year two-wheeler sales for the month of December are down 40 percent in urban areas and 50-60 percent in rural. Bookings for two-wheelers is down about 25-30 percent and that for cars are down 10-15, said Paul. The luxury segment, CV segment and tractor sales have also been hit badly, said Paul. However, the car segment in cities has seen recovery in December and is likely to do sales similar to that of December last year. Rural car segment, too, is better than November but has to catch up with last year December sales. Moreover, manufacturers have cut productions and offered discounts, incentives for car sales, so inventories in December are less.
Farm loan waivers pose risks; corp taxes must be lower

Demonetisation has pushed the growth recovery by a couple of quarters and it is likely to pick up only in second half of CY17. The full impact of demonetisation will be seen in January and once the cash withdrawal limits are eased, normalcy will return to the market because consumption is a major part of the economy, says Ved. With talks of a farm loan waiver doing the rounds, farmers shouldn't be encouraged not to pay back loans because it would be a bad practice. Instead, there are other tools to help farmers such as support prices, greater access to credit etc which is a better way to solve the crisis; waivers have a systemic risk to a country’s finances.

From April next year growth should bounce back. Demonetisation hasn’t changed the structural demand-supply balance, but it has only got dislocated.” FIIs selling are a function of EM allocations. US interest rates going up, dollar strengthening are some of the headwinds for EMs. Markets have absorbed the events of 2016. People are still looking for opportunities, adding that for investors there aren’t that many places to go. India’s GDP has been doubling every six years in rupee terms which is leading to growth in consumption and investments. In the medium- to long-term a lot of investors are positive and they are in a wait-and-watch mode.
Whatever disruption MFIs and SMEs have faced, they have enough fall-back reserves, Shah said, referring to how very few people live from hand to month. We think remonetisation is now crucial; the banking sector has gone through a huge amount of NPAs. This entire stress due to demonetisation maynot be more than Rs 40-50,000 crore for banks. The new year might be a good place to kick off tax rationalisation, adding that he expects the government to spend on social programme. The government should benefit to the tune of Rs 100,000 crore from the demonetisation impact by way of additional taxes or in the form of currency won’t come back to RBI. This will give elbow room for government to cut taxes.

Panel mulling direct transfer scheme for power users
Consumers might soon get direct subsidy for electricity. An expert panel consisting of officials from the states and power industry are looking into a possibility of this and will submit its report to the power ministry in January. The committee is working on ways to increase power demand and consumption. It is also looking at ways in which power can be subsidised similar to how LPG is passed onto the consumers.
If the scheme gets approved, then direct benefit transfer will be on actual consumption and not on power losses or pilferage, mention the ET report. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the nation on the eve of the new year. Modi's speech will focus on the note ban. Channel checks reveal that there could be one big bang announcement. UP elections will also take centre stage. It is largely expected that even as the demonetisation drive is nearing its end, and pain is still, the PM will take the floor to offer sops and usher in 2017 with some good news. Modi’s address will likely take place at 7:30 pm on December 31.
